What Is Graphite Beneficiation?

Graphite Beneficiation is the process of separating graphite flakes from gangue minerals (quartz, mica, feldspar). Since graphite is naturally hydrophobic, Flotation is the primary method. A critical challenge is protecting the large flakes (which have higher value) from being crushed, requiring a gentle Stage Grinding process.

Method 1: Multi-Stage Flotation (Standard)

Best for Crystalline Flake Graphite (>5% fixed carbon).

  • Process: 3-Stage Crushing -> 2-Stage Grinding -> Roughing -> 9-Stage Cleaning -> 3-Stage Scavenging.
  • Key Tech: Low-speed grinding protects flakes. Scale breakage rate < 5%.
  • Result: Concentrate Grade > 92%.

Method 2: Gravity + Flotation (For Mixed Ores)

Suitable for low-grade ore (5-8%) containing heavy minerals like Pyrite.

  • Gravity Sep: Use Jigs to remove heavy pyrite first.

Q1: Why is "Stage Grinding" used for Graphite?

A: Large graphite flakes are much more valuable than fine powder. Continuous grinding destroys these flakes. Stage Grinding (grind -> float -> regrind concentrate) ensures we recover large flakes as soon as they are liberated, without over-grinding them.

Q2: What reagents are used in Graphite flotation?

A: Typical collectors are Kerosene or Diesel Oil (non-polar hydrocarbons). Frothers include Pine Oil or #2 Oil. Inhibitors like lime or water glass are used to depress pyrite or quartz.

Q3: Can you achieve 99% purity?

A: Physical beneficiation (flotation) typically reaches 94-96% purity. To reach 99%+ (Battery Grade), chemical purification (acid/alkali leaching) or thermal purification is required after the flotation plant.
