What Is Gemstone Beneficiation?

Gemstone Beneficiation is the process of extracting precious stones from gravel and clay. Since gemstones have a higher specific gravity than common rock, Gravity Separation (Jigs) is the primary method. For diamonds, their hydrophobic property allows for specialized Grease Separation or X-Ray Sorting.

Gemstone Process Steps

Step 1: Washing & Screening (Pre-treatment)

Goal: Remove sticky clay and classify gravel sizes.

  • Washing: A Rotary Scrubber or Trommel washes the ore to release gemstones trapped in clay.
  • Screening: Vibrating Screens classify material into 3 fractions: +5mm (Coarse), 2-5mm (Medium), and -2mm (Fine).

Step 2: Gravity Enrichment

Goal: Concentrate heavy gemstones and discard light gravel.

  • Coarse/Medium (+2mm): Processed by Jig Machine. The pulsating water flow stratifies the bed, allowing heavy gemstones to sink for recovery.
  • Fine (-2mm): Processed by Spiral Concentrator to recover small gems.

Step 3: Selection & Purification

Goal: Final separation of gemstones from heavy mineral concentrate.

  • Shaking Table: Further upgrades the concentrate grade.
  • Grease/Oil Separation: Specifically for Diamonds. Diamonds stick to grease while water-wetted gangue slides off.
  • Optical Sorting: Uses X-ray transmission (XRT) to detect and eject gemstones from the stream (for high-value operations).

Q1: How do you prevent theft?

A: For high-value gemstones like diamonds, the final recovery stage (Grease/X-ray) is enclosed in a secure "Gold Room" or "Sort House" with restricted access and automated handling to minimize human contact.

Q2: Why use a Scrubber instead of a simple screen?

A: Gemstones are often trapped inside sticky clay balls. A simple screen won't break these open, leading to loss. A Rotary Scrubber uses tumbling action and lifters to disintegrate the clay and release the gems.

Q3: Can this plant process multiple gem types?

A: Yes. The gravity separation section (Jigs) recovers all heavy minerals, including Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires, and Garnets simultaneously. They can be hand-sorted or optically sorted later.
