The Desliming Hopper (also called Desliming Cone or Cone Classifier) is a simple, power-free gravity separation equipment. It looks like an inverted pyramid or cone.
It is mainly used for Desliming (removing fine mud) and Thickening (increasing pulp density) before hydraulic classification. Compared to a Hydrocyclone, it requires no pressure and has zero energy consumption.
Utilizing gravity to separate heavy sand from light slime in a static pool.
Slurry enters the central feeding cylinder. The flow velocity slows down significantly due to the expanding volume of the cone.
Coarse and heavy particles settle down to the bottom apex. Fine slime and water rise to the top surface.
Thickened sand is discharged from the bottom valve (Underflow). Clarified water or slime overflows into the peripheral launder (Overflow).
When to use a simple Hopper and when to use a Cyclone?
| Feature | Desliming Hopper | Hydrocyclone |
|---|---|---|
| Force | Gravity (1G). | Centrifugal Force (High G). |
| Power Cost | Zero (Gravity feed). | Medium (Requires Pump). |
| Cut Point | Coarser (>0.074mm). | Finer (down to 0.01mm). |
| Capacity | Large Volume Buffer. | High Throughput per unit. |

It relies entirely on gravity. No motors, no electricity, and no moving parts. Extremely low operating cost.
The large cone volume acts as a buffer tank, stabilizing the feed flow for downstream equipment like gravity separators.
Simple structure with minimal wear. The discharge valve is the only part that might need replacement over long periods.
| Model | Diameter (mm) | Settling Area (m²) | Volume (m³) | Feed Size (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| φ1000 | 1000 | 0.75 | 0.27 | < 2.0 |
| φ1500 | 1500 | 2.0 | 0.83 | < 2.0 |
| φ2000 | 2000 | 3.0 | 2.27 | < 2.0 |
| φ2500 | 2500 | 4.9 | 4.0 | < 2.0 |
| φ3000 | 3000 | 7.0 | 7.0 | < 2.0 |

A: By adjusting the bottom valve opening size. A smaller opening results in higher density but slower discharge rate. Automatic valves can be installed for precise control.
A: It is designed for fine particles, typically less than 2mm. Larger particles might block the bottom discharge outlet.
A: For small-scale operations, yes. It acts like a mini Thickener (Concentrator). However, for large-scale continuous thickening, a mechanical drive thickener is more efficient.
